Jermain Defoe’s dad wastes £5 of his £65-a-week backing his son to score

Down-and-out dad’s dodgy bet

Jermain Defoe’s dad wasted a fiver out of his £65-a-week benefit money betting that Tottenham’s new signing would score on his debut. Spurs lost 1-0 to Wigan yesterday.

Jimmy Defoe is reported to have staked £5 on Defoe Jnr bagging a goal against the Latics. He was allegedly overheard boasting that his son always scores on his debut.

The News of the World claims Jimmy, aged 45, is a regular in a soup kitchen close to his digs in Canning Town and once sold a Gucci watch - a Father’s Day present from Jermain - to raise money for crack.

That’s a cheap shot, (pardon the pun). But surely taking the piss out of a footballer’s Dad is a touch unnecessary. Unless it’s Neville Neville (Father of, you’ve guessed it, the Neville brothers). For shame…
