Everton defender Phil Jagielka was held at knifepoint and forced to hand over jewellery in a raid on his Cheshire home. It is suspected the daft robbers struck at 8pm last night because they thought the player would be on Carling Cup duty against Hull, but they were not up-to-date with their team news.

Jagielka was at home resting an injury when the robbers struck at his £2 million mansion in Mere.

The raiders threatened Jagielka with a knife and forced him to hand over jewellery, including Rolex watches, and the keys to his Range Rover, which was later found abandoned nearby. Jagielka was not injured during the incident.

The raid follows similar break-ins at the homes of Steven Gerrard, Federico Macheda, Roque Santa Cruz, Darren Fletcher, Dirk Kuyt, Pepe Reina, Jerzy Dudek, Daniel Agger, Peter Crouch and Florent Sinama-Pongolle.
