Athletic Bilbao’s Joseba Exteberria will play for free
Former Spain international Joseba Exteberria is donating himself to the club he has played for since the age of 17 for a season. The 31-year-old’s contract expires this summer, but he has vowed to stay on at Athletic Bilbao for a further season on a voluntary basis. The deal is kosher – the winger has signed an official contract extension which confirms he will play for zilch next season.
He said: “I wanted to do this gesture but never did I want to set a precedent.”
That is a pretty sizeable donation to the club in terms of wages they have saved, so fair play to Joseba. Rumours that Wigan are trying to convince Titus Bramble to sign a similar contract have not yet been confirmed.
