French newspaper makes monumental coq up
French newspaper L’Equipe has left itself open to both ridicule and lawsuits after incorrectly reporting in its LES BAD BOYS DU FOOT ANGLAIS that Robbie Fowler was found in possession of £120,000 of cocaine. Apparently, Fowler was arrested for the offence in March 2008.
A little Google search by that bastion of investigative journalism, The Fiver, revealed that a similarly straightforward search engine enquiry had delivered a French journalist to The Spoof website.
That wonderful but entirely made-up report claims that Fowler was arrested at East Midlands airport trying to smuggle cocaine from Brazil inside footballs. This is, of course, totally preposterous – a flight from Brazil would never land at East Midlands Airport!
As if the “The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious” line underneath the story and the fact that the website is called The Spoof didn’t give the game away, the player’s lawyer is quoted as being one “Bob Twat”. Nice work, fellas.
