Sergio Ramos blacks up for Christmas

Spain, where racism never went out of fashion

In England, jolly Saint Nick pays us a visit on 24 December. Spanish kids receive their gifts from the Three Wise Men who – much to the relief of said Spanish kids – have ditched gold, frankincense and myrrh for gifts which the recipients are likely to appreciate.

In the book of Sergio Ramos, that is a good enough reason to blacken his face and ride through the streets looking like a cross between the Queen Mother and The Black and White Minstrel Show. The inappropriateness of this sails way over the head of the Real Madrid player and indeed his club who are promoting this goodwill gesture!

Whilst I agree that the Spanish do a lot of things in poor taste racially speaking I don’t think this qualifies, in fact, I think it is a good example of the kneejerk political correctness that sometimes occurs in the media. This is only a white guy dressing as a black guy, how is that a crime? Traditionally one of the three wise men was black, so I really don’t see how it is an issue for someone to put on some black facepaint to dress a bit more like the traditional three wise men. I can’t see how it is derogatory or racist in anyway, unlike the basketball teams efforts, which I think were derogatory. If you can explain how this is racist, please tell me.
