Strangest transfer of the window so far… Matt Derbyshire to Olympiacos

Rover and out to Greece

Blackburn Rovers bench-warmer Matt Derbyshire can look forward to being pelted with missiles very soon as he plots a move to the Greek Super League. The 22-year-old has apparently arrived in Greece to complete a six-month loan move to Olympiacos. This strikes me of one of the weirder deals we have seen so far this January transfer window.

He said: “My signing with Olympiacos is a big step for me in my career, and for what I want to do in my career. I don’t know if I will be staying here for more than six months, but I do know Olympiacos is a very good team.”

The move is very perculiar, not least because Roque Santa Cruz is almost certain to leave Ewood Park before the end of the month. That still leaves Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts ahead in the pecking order, but Derbyshire would be in prime position to capitalise on that. He had already made 17 appearances for Blackburn this season, so he has not exactly been frozen out.

Any ideas what Derbyshire is hoping to get from the move?

Another Stead or Gallagher in the making?

He’s certainly not the first Premiership to move to Greece- LuaLua did it a season ago.

Are Olympiakos a better team than Blackburn though? :p

Hoping for a permament move over the summer and Champions League next season is it?
