Beckham cronies alleged to have picked Gullit
Amid the considerable venom currently leaving the Los Angeles area in the general direction of Milan, something quite interesting has turned up. Author Grant Wahl has had very privileged access to David Beckham and LA Galaxy since Goldenballs arrived in the US as he researched a book he was working on.
Among the most useful of the many nuggets he seems to uncovered is that Backham’s close friend/agent/potential Leyton Orient co-owner, Terry Byrne, was secretly given a consultancy role at Galaxy. And, so the story goes, it was Byrne who led the search for Galaxy’s new coach in 2008, picked Ruud Gullit and set-up the Dutchman’s disastrous reign at the Home Depot Center.
Wahl wrote: “In a move that was never publicized by the team, Beckham’s best friend and then personal manager, Terry Byrne, became a paid consultant for the Galaxy and conducted the coaching search that led to the hiring of Ruud Gullit, whose reign of error torpedoed L.A.’s 2008 season. (Byrne was dropped when Gullit was forced out last August, leaving Beckham in a sour mood toward the Galaxy.)”
