Julien Faubert thought his move to Real Madrid was a wind-up

He wasn’t the only one

It is fair to say that Julien Faubert did not exactly set the Premier League on-fire during his time at West Ham. The £6 million signing struggled with injuries and form since arriving at Upton Park in 2007. You can understand then that he would think a proposed move to Real Madrid was a work of fiction. But the Frenchman had not reckoned on the fact that eagle-eyed Premier League talent scout Juande Ramos is now in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Faubert said: “I got a call from a Madrid agent but I didn’t really take it seriously. I thought he was winding me up. Then a few minutes later my agent called me to tell me it wasn’t a joke.”

The ex-Bordeaux man also revealed the dangers of playing for West Ham. He continued: “I couldn’t see a way out [of West Ham]. I thought I would be staying at West Ham, suffering mentally.”

Expected him to do really well at West Ham, then he got injured and was being played out of position. Curbishley and his staff really did Faubert no favours. Still, he does seem cast in the stroppy Frenchman mould. Hope he enjoys being training ground fodder at Real.
