Newcastle keeper compares himself to a low-mileage motor
Steve Harper has staked his claim to step out of Shay Given’s shadow and hold down the goalkeeper’s jersey at Newcastle for a few seasons by comparing himself to a low-mileage car. Given’s long-time understudy believes he could be about to reap the rewards of his years of benchwarming.
He said: “I’m 34 next month, but I’m like a low-mileage car. No previous owner, plenty of petrol left in the tank.”
Who said a bit rusty and parked in one of the least secure places in the Premier League? How dare you! He might have a point though – he has started just 111 league games in his career. That is considerably less than Wayne Rooney, for instance, who is a decade his junior.
