Under 21s try to do Johan Cruyff…

…but end up emulating Thierry Henry and Robert Pires instead. This ridiculous penalty comes from Portugal Under 21s 2-0 victory over Cape Verde yesterday.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Pereirinha attempted to re-create the famous passed penalty by laying the ball off to team-mate Rui Pedro. Unfortunately, a defender arrived at the ball before Rui Pedro!

The duo have both now been removed from the squad to face a Madeira XI in their next match. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, the instructions to leave them out came from Portugal head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Pereirinha said: “It was something that had been decided with my team-mate. Unfortunately it went wrong. It was not an attitude of lack of respect for our opponents, but the circumstances of the game gave me the idea.

“I’m here to accept that. The coach talked to me and told me not to ever repeat it. I can only say again that the decision to try it was not out of any disrespect to our opponents.”

Here is Cruyff getting it right:

And here is Henry and Pires getting it very wrong:

I think Queiroz should take a look at his woefully underperforming team instead because if they fail to qualify ahead of Denmark and Hungary, he will have to go.
Heck, based on the first half of the qualif., there was a case to be made to fire him now.

THen again, maybe he can shift the blame for this selections woeful play on the under 21s.
