Football video: Referee wrongly awards penalty, demands goalkeeper saves it

Crazy action from the Belgian league

The match between Belgian sides Gent and Turbize was overshadowed by some bizarre refereeing. Firstly, Gent striker Mbaye Leye cheated his way to a penalty with a devious dive. As you can see in the video above, Turbize goalkeeper Nicolas Ardouin clearly made no contact with Leye.

Referee Peter Vervecken was conned and gave the penalty, but at some point between making the decision and the penalty been taken allegedly realised that he had made a mistake. Whether this was after consultation with his assistant, because of the sheepish look on Leye’s face or the heartfelt protests of Ardouin we do not know.

Apparently lacking the guts to reverse his decision, Vervecken instead went for a one-to-one with Ardouin and implored: “You had better stop this!” The plan didn’t work out as the resulting spot-kick was cooly chipped into the net. The referee has since admitted there was no contact and claimed that Ardouin must have misunderstood their little conversation!
