Is there any defence for Fabio Capello’s defence?

Unusual looking backline to face Slovakia

There are a few surprising calls in Fabio Capello’s England squad to face Slovakia this weekend, and most of them seem to revolve around the defence. I was under the impression that the Italian set himself certain parameters to avoid too many selection headaches. The message I always got was that if you are not playing regularly for your club then you don’t get in the England squad.

Ledley King is not even training regularly with his club, never mind playing and yet he is in the squad. If he doesn’t withdraw from the squad between now and the match then Fab Cap should relaunch himself as a miracle worker. Is he going to play a part in an intensive World Cup campaign when he cannot muster more than a game a week on his knee injury?

Another Capello rule as I understood it was that you picked at least two players for each position and that they must be playing in that position for their club. So correct me if I’m wrong, but the only out-and-out right-back I can see in the squad is Glen Johnson? Has the Portsmouth defender really become a shoo-in for England?

Yes – Glen Johnson is a triffic player and most definitely England’s best right back. Jagielka is a more than adequate right back cover. Better than Wes Brown anyway!

  • Rob Parker

Jagielka is predominantly playing at centre-back these days and has been for a while though. Should Capello not have another regular right-back in the squad?
