Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has arranged for a barn owl to swoop down the aisle with the rings when he marries fiancee Rebecca Ellison in August. The owl will fly down when the registar asks ‘Do you have the rings?’ and will land on the arm of whoever Ferdinand chooses to be his best man.
The wedding is being held at Peckforton Castle in Cheshire, which has a resident falconry team. Ollie the owl has already acted as ring-bearer at six ceremonies and has so far avoided ruining anyone’s big day. The castle’s head falconer Mike Roberts said: “She will simply swoop down and land on his arm and he will be able to take the pouch containing the rings from her leg. I will be standing behind him and then the bird will hop on to my arm and the job will be done. It’s never gone wrong yet but one never knows.”
Rooney for best man! Please, Rio!
