Not-so-gracious in defeat

The Portuguese Carlsberg Cup final ended in bizarre scenes as Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Silva threw his runners-up medal across the pitch after defeat to Benfica. If you are thinking Silva sounds like the ultimate bad loser then you would probably be right, but there was some method to his madness.

Sporting had taken an early lead and were comfortably keeping Benfica at bay when the referee made a very bad penalty decision. The official decided that Silva had handled in the area, awarded the penalty and sent-off the defender for a second bookable offence. Replays show the ball hit Silva’s chest.

It was a fake result made by the referee that awarded a penalty and sent off Pedro Silva with no reason. The ball hits only the chest. There were 13 minutes left and Sporting had the game under control.

It is very sad to see that the football here in Portugal is getting more and more decided by the mistakes of the referees.

I had to understand the player reaction because it was him involved in the situation. Sometimes you can’t control your anger.
