You wait years for a new Zinedine Zidane, and then it turns out he’s Spanish
Zizou’s son set for Spain international call-up
Zinedine Zidane’s son, Enzo, is in line for a call-up to Spain’s under 15 squad after celebrating his 14th birthday yesterday. Given France’s obsession with uncovering Petit Zizou’s, the fact that a genuine new Zidane seems to believe his international loyalties lie with Spain is bound to be a kick in the teeth.
In some quarters this is being used to take a dig at Enzo and question his loyalty, so I am going to stand up for him. Firstly, yes, he was born in France but the kid has lived in Spain since he was eight.
He left France when he was one (by my reckoning) , spent a few years in Italy when Papa was with Juventus, but has spent the majority of his fledgling years in Spain, speaking Spanish, making Spanish friends, and playing for Real Madrid’s academy. Is it any wonder the kid feels Spanish?
Also, given Zizou’s achievements and the pressure Enzo would be under to live up to his father if he ever did make the France national team, it is probably better for the youngster to progress without the overwhelming strain that would inevitably come with representing Les Bleus.
