An amateur footballer found himself in trouble with the referee after his attempts to wind up an opponent backfired. A Charlton Villa player was yellow-carded after allegedly breaking wind as an International Manchester player was about to take a penalty. The initial penalty was saved, but the ref also ordered a retake after the disturbance.
Two Villa players, including their goalkeeper, were later sent-off for disputing the initial yellow card. Villa boss Ian Treadwell produced the sort of quote tabloid editors kill for when he said: “My gut feeling is that someone made the noise with his mouth.”
