Spot the moment multi-millionaire wishes he’d stayed retired
Former Arsenal and Barcelona Marc Overmars was a shining example of what footballers ought to do when they hang up his boots. No sorry tales of drink, drugs and depression here, the Flying Dutchman did well out of football and invested his money wisely. Since hanging up his boots in 2004, the 36-year-old’s business interests have done so well that he rejoined his first club, Go Ahead Eagles, as a director.
Four years after his retirement, Overmars put in an outstanding performance in Jaap Stam’s testimonial last summer. That display, coupled with an injury crisis at Go Ahead, coaxed Overmars out of retirement as he looked to drive the club towards promotion to the Eredivisie.
But it all ended in tears on Friday night when the veteran winger broke his leg in the final minute of a match against TOP Oss having only been on the field a few minutes. Go Ahead have made the playoffs, but they won’t be able to call upon their crocked millionaire for assistance.
Fair play to him for walking off the pitch with a broken leg though!
