Top five players to watch out for in the Confederations Cup
With the start of the Confederations Cup less than two weeks away, OTP takes a look at some of the names you ought to be watching out for
The 24-year-old Internacional striker has had the early part of his career ravaged by long-term injuries, but he has impressed this season with 11 goals in 22 games. And with goals like the one above, he is surely one to keep an eye on if he gets a chance to play in Brazil’s star-studded squad.
2. Mohamad Aboutrika
Instrumental for Egypt during the African Cup of Nations in 2008, he scored four goals in that tournament, including the winner in the final, and was crowned African Footballer of the Year 2008. Although for the sake of his team-mates’ health, he’ll be hoping he doesn’t score any more winners!
3. Innocent Mdledle
Admittedly, little is known about the South African left-back, but with a name like that on the back of his shirt, there’s no doubt where the Fair Play Award is going. And his nickname, Amaglug-glug, isn’t anything to go by either.
4. Alaa Abdul-Zahra
Again, a some what unknown quantity, but if his name is anything to go by (Alaa translates from Arabic simply as “awesome”) then we are in for a treat! According to Wikipedia, he goes by the nickname ‘Kaka of Iraq’ or ‘Iraqi Kaka’. No pressure then.
5. Fabio Quagliarella
Napoli’s new signing has been in fine nick for former club Udinese, and was the stand-out player in the UEFA Cup this season with 8 goals in 10 games before his side were eliminated. He will be hoping to get a chance to reproduce his club form at international level, which beats trying to operate a photocopier anyway.
