Big fine for a little man
With every man and his dog moping on about Chelsea’s transfer ban, OTP is taking it upon itself to stick up for Gael Kakuta in all this. The 18-year-old’s move to Stamford Bridge from Lens is what has caused this tapping-up storm, and FIFA has come down hard on the player too.
Just back from a lengthy injury lay-off, Kakuta has now been hit by a four month playing ban. People have attacked referees, dished out racist abuse, spat at fellow professionals and gone on strike and received lesser punishments than Kakuta.
He may have allegedly broken the rules, he may have been greedy and he may have been disloyal but football’s governing body needs to gain some sense of perspective with its punishments.
On top of that, the Frenchman has been handed a £682,000 fine in the form of compensation. We know that in practice that money will probably come from Chelsea, but for FIFA to make an 18-year-old jointly responsible for paying that amount of money is crazy. Don’t they know young footballers have supersized car insurance payments to make to keep up with the older pros’ wheels?
Chelsea are moaning that their 16-month transfer ban is “totally disproportionate to the alleged offence”, but it is Kakuta whose punishments have been blown out of proportion.
