Rupert Murdoch helps address the need for a social life
Let’s face some facts. We are closing in on the end of the month. Anyone who shares my monthly fiscal philosophy of ‘two weeks living well, two weeks scraping by’ will be looking forward to a weekend on the sofa with any remaining cash spent at the local off licence.
At times like this, I’m all too glad I invested in Sky Sports and ESPN. So what can we look forward to?
Firstly, a not-so-friendly Friday feast: the Steel City derby. There’s no love lost between United and Wednesday of Sheffield, and with only three points separating the rivals, it should make excellent viewing. Rarely does this fixture fail to deliver a controversial moment or two, so expect fireworks.
Saturday throws up an interesting Premiership tie between West Ham and Liverpool, with the in-form Yossi Benayoun returning to his old stomping ground. Later that evening there’s Barcelona facing Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou. Last season’s fixture was touted as a battle of the greats between Lio Messi and his Argentine compatriot Kun Aguero, and finished in a quite conclusive 6-1 win for Barca. With continual internal wrangling behind the scenes at Atleti, Guardiola’s men will probably fancy this one. As an aside, maybe the trusty Sky+ box could do the honours with Juventus’ tie with Livorno too?
Then Sunday is derby day in the Premiership. Big spending Manchester City facing city rivals United. After Adebayor’s controversial tomfoolery last week against his former employers, what money on Carlos Tevez continuing the trend at Old Trafford?
Part two of ‘Super Sunday’ features high-flying Spurs’ visit to Stamford Bridge, hoping to get their top four aspirations back on track against Chelsea. Hopefully Harry isn’t holding his breath! To round off the evening, Real Madrid’s new galacticos welcome newly promoted Xerez at the Bernabeu, and Valencia play host to the wonderfully pronounced Sporting HeeeeeHon.
