Spaniard loves to cut it fine in Europe

Rafa Benitez appears to be attempting to re-enact his side’s incredible Champions League group stage qualification of the season before last. That year, Liverpool relied on big wins against Besiktas, Porto and Marseille in their last three games in order to qualify.

Asked about the similarities before last night’s home defeat to Lyon, Benitez maintained that this season would not be as nail-biting. Perhaps the prospect of a bit more drama appealed to him!

He said: “It’s a different situation. We are playing at home, with the fans behind us, but we still have three more games to play, so it is not the same.

“Then, we had just one point and we needed to win every game, but now we already have three so we just have to keep doing the same things as before. I understand that we have to win, but it is not the same set of circumstances.”

Hmm, it is starting to look very, very similar though, Rafa.
