Referee Chris Foy booked the wrong Da Silva twin

A case of mistaken identity

Sir Alex Ferguson has previously joked about swapping the shirts of the Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, in order to trick officials. But his plans to confuse the identities of the Brazilian youngsters were pre-empted by referee Chris Foy, who booked the wrong twin during the Carling Cup tie at Barnsley.

Fabio received a yellow card for an 83rd minute trip on Jamal Campbell-Ryce, but the foul was actually committed by his brother. In Foy’s defence, both Da Silvas – squad numbers 20 and 21 – challenged the Barnsley player, although the foul was clearly committed by Rafael.

A United spokesman said: “We are in discussions with the FA over this matter. We have pointed out that the referee made a mistake on the night and we obviously want it to be corrected. We will be asking for further advice on how best to rectify the situation.”

Funniest story in ages – just as well the FA gave the booking to the right twin! Will it ever happen where one gets off for 2 bookable offences and only actually gets carded once?!
