Gunners used forest to make sure they weren’t barking up the wrong tree
Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has revealed club scout Steve Rowley went to great lengths to keep tabs on him while the club considered making a bid for him.
Rowley stalked the then Ajax man to the Belgian seaside resort of Oostduinkerke to watch him train with the Belgium squad last season. And he hid himself among some trees to get a decent look at his target.
Playing in a three-versus-four training match, Vermaelen convinced Rowley that Arsene Wenger had spotted a gem.
Vermaelen said: “The scout told me afterwards that he had hidden in the forest. They know more about me here at Arsenal than you might think.”
Be careful who you talk to, Thomas.
