Smaller is better for Irish international

Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan was thanking his lucky stars that Little Glenn isn’t any bigger after Patrick Vieira’s groin-high tackle on Tuesday.

Whelan reckons he was spared too much pain because his package wasn’t big enough to feel the full force of the Manchester City star’s studs.

The 26-year-old said: “I said to the referee and to Patrick Vieira himself that he’s been lucky, but you just have to get on with it. It was great to have a battle with him and I think I did OK. Obviously he’s been one of the top players of all time in the Premier League.

“But thank God I’m not more well-endowed! Maybe if I was a bit bigger the tackle would have hurt more.”
