Rams rely on stand-in keeper

Derby midfielder Robbie Savage was left to take the goalkeeper’s gloves as his side lost 4-1 at Reading. First-choice goalie Stephen Bywater went off injured in the 13th minute, and his replacement Saul Deeney was sent-off for a foul in the penalty are in the 41st minute with Derby 2-1 down.

Savage was in nets to watch Shane Long miss the resulting penalty, but reckons he would have saved it anyway. He then kept the Royals at bay with some impressive goalkeeping until Ryan Bertrand found the net in the 69th minute. Simon Church rounded off the rout with a goal six minutes from time.

Savage said: “Call me Robbie Southall. I’m just a natural sportsman. I would have saved the penalty — I was going the right way.”

We do know he had been getting some practice. Sort of.
