Wayne Rooney is almost certain to miss the World Cup with the ankle injury he sustained in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash between Manchester United and Bayern Munich. Scans show a grade three tear of his ankle ligaments which will require surgery.
United and England fans had been awaiting the results of the scan since Rooney was seen leaving hospital on crutches yesterday. But the news will be devastating for both sets of supporters.
Rooney’s consultant Dr Olof Silpra said: “The chances of Wayne Rooney being fit for the World Cup are almost zero. His injury will require an operation almost immediately, and there is a possibility that further surgery will be needed.
“I would normally expect my patients to be out for around three months. Even if he makes a remarkable recovery, his mobility would not be what fans are used to seeing from Wayne Rooney.”
Perhaps of greater concern to fans is the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson let a doctor whose name is an anagram of April Fools anywhere near his star player.
