Fabio Capello was forced to draft yet another rookie keeper into his plans as his England goalkeeping nightmare continues. With Joe Hart the only fit goalie in the squad, Capello had to call on 19-year-old Arsenal goalkeeper James Shea to work with Hart during the session at the Gunners’ London Colney training ground.
Injuries to Ben Foster (knee) and Scott Carson (back) meant Shea got his chance to impress.
This follows the call-up of under 21 keepers Frankie Fielding and Scott Loach ahead of last month’s friendly with Hungary, when Capello’s goalkeeping options were hit by injury and retirement.
Gunners team-mate Theo Walcott said: “It’s nice for James as he can go back to his family and tell them who he played against.
“It’s a good experience for him and will hopefully make him a better player. To experience the England squad is a nice bonus.”
OTP can just imagine Capello asking Arsene Wenger for a favour and the Frenchman doing his best to oblige: “I’m sure I’ve got an English keeper round here somewhere.”
