Bolton striker Kevin Davies named in England squad

Trotters veteran in line for first cap

Uncapped Bolton striker Kevin Davies has been called up for England’s squad to play Montenegro. Davies’ inclusion is the only real surprise in Fabio Capello’s squad.

Andy Carroll had been tipped for a call-up after being left out of the under 21 squad, but he misses out on a first call-up. Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere was a doubt after being named in the under 21 squad but takes his place in the senior squad too.

I had touted Davies for an England call-up about four years ago. Although the overwhelming consensus was that he just wasn’t international class, I still believe he is the sort of player who unsettles defenders at any level of the game.

What I would question is the sense of bringing in an untried player who will be 35 before the next major tournament and 37 before the next World Cup. It is hardly a long-term solution to England’s problems.

It appears the BBC were very well briefed on the squad and Davies’ inclusion. Their story on the squad announcement says it hasn’t been updated since 9.30am this morning.

Anyhow, what are your thoughts on Davies’ and the squad in general?

Davies warranted a call-up earlier, it’s a shame its finally come when he’s in his 30s. However, he’s a better choice than Heskey if a physical, target-type forward is what you’re looking for.

It’s ironic that Big Kev’s had a call-up at the age of 33. He has terrorised so called International defenders like Matthhew Upson and Olaf Melburg for years. Even Terry and Carvalho said they didn’t like playing against him! He outbattled the Brazillian centre half Lucio at the Allianz arena in the UEFA cup 3 years ago. The hard man of Brazillian football was frightened of being tackled. It was hillarious to watch. What would the defenders of Montenegro make of him? Capello should give this brave, honest pro a chance.
