Young midfielder makes outrageous claim

FC Mainz have been the surprise package of European football this season, making headlines for winning all seven of their Bundesliga games.

One might suspect that the word from the top would be to remain calm at such a time, and aim to be nothing more than quietly confident.

Such a thought process has obviously not struck German Under 21 captain Lewis Holtby, although as an Everton fan with an English father you would have thought that he would know better.

“If we are able to maintain our fitness and if we go on playing in an aggressive manner, then anything is possible. Maybe no team will beat us.”

So the prediction is that his club will be unbeaten for the next 27 games, and be the first Bundesliga club to have a perfect season since FC Dresdner in 1943.

Bet him a tenner he is wrong.
