Peter Shilton begins campaigning to defend his England caps record

Shilts thinks Fabio needs to look to the future. Hmm, wonder why?

England’s most-capped player Peter Shilton has revealed that he doesn’t think David Beckham should play for England again. The legendary keeper has 125 caps, and Beckham is currently 10 short of the record.

Perhaps that’s why Shilton has chosen to speak up against Beckham being brought back into the England squad.

He told talkSPORT: “I think it will be very difficult for David to get back in to the squad on the playing side of it. Capello has got to start playing the youngsters – that is my personal opinion. Unless he is playing ninety 90 minutes regularly then I think you have to look to the future, I don’t think this bit part business is right for England.

“He has been a fantastic player for England for years but he has been playing bit-parts lately and he had a very serious injury. I think it would be a backward step if Beckham was recalled.”

Nice try, Shilts. We know your game!

IMHO I think he’s right, right now after a dismal World Cup people want to see the younger faces coming through with a handful of experienced plays thrown in. Like Terry, Gerrard, Lampard (in the squad but on the bench) and Rooney up front. England will easily qualify from this group so we need to give the younger players as much experience of playing for England as possible, looking towards the next World Cup.
