Sunderland’s Anton Ferdinand arrested, currently behind bars
Anton Ferdinand is currently in police custody after handing himself in at a Newcastle police station. Yesterday, OTP told you that a warrant had been issued for his arrest after he missed a court hearing on Monday.
The Sunderland defender had been due to be sentenced after being convicted of using a mobile phone while driving in July. The 25-year-old brother of England captain Rio faces a driving ban as he already has nine points on his licence from a previous offence.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said Mr Ferdinand remained in custody after reporting to the city’s Pilgrim Street police station by prior appointment.
But a Sunderland spokesman blamed the arrest on a “misunderstanding” and added: “The club is liaising with Northumbria Police in order to resolve this quickly.”
