Wayne Rooney has left himself open to a nasty bout of hairdryer treatment after defying Sir Alex Ferguson by denying he is currently carrying an injury. His Manchester United manager claimed that he had not played in recent club games because of a “niggling” ankle injury.
But suspicions that Rooney’s absence was actually due to a loss of form or to shield him from the spotlight following revelations about his private life seem to have been proven true after Rooney spoke out to refute suggestions that he is injured.
He said: “No, I’ve had no ankle problem all season.”
Asked why Ferguson had been suggesting otherwise, he said: “I don’t know.”
This follows reports today that Rooney has broken off contract talks with United, amid rumours he wants a move to Real Madrid. Not that game again!
