Real Madrid midfielder Ruben De La Red forced to retire
Heart defect forces young talent out of the game
Yesterday football received the sad news that 25-year-old midfielder Ruben De La Red has been forced to retire due a heart problem.
He has been unable to play for two years since collapsing in a cup game against Real Union in October 2008.
The player released a tearful statement that read:
I’ve fought against this in vain and doctors advised me to stop. I always dreamt of becoming a football player and to be successful at this club, which is the greatest in the world. Real Madrid has watched me grow since I joined the Under-10 side and now it sees me retire from the game. I want to become a coach now. I may have a problem in my heart, but it still beats for Madridismo.
De La Red, who played three times for Spain scoring one goal, will remain at the Bernabeu as a youth coach.
