Bench-warmer spies his chance

Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has revealed he hopes Joe Hart’s injury keeps him out of action for a couple of weeks so he can stake his claim to be Roberto Mancini’s first-choice.

Speaking after playing in the Republic of Ireland’s defeat to Norway, Given joked that he might benefit from Hart’s misfortune.

He said: “I don’t know how bad Joe’s injury is. You don’t wish anything bad on someone. But hopefully he’s out for a couple of weeks!”

Given has made six appearances for Ireland this season, but just twice for his club. That could change this weekend.

I don’t like comments like this even in jest. If Given was worthy of his place he would be there. The bottom line is that being glued to his goal line last season cost City enough goals to get them eliminated from the Carling Cup and not qualify for the Champions League. He was also not very good in Poland last week

Hold on a minute shay given was man city’s best player last year and if it weren’t for given city wud have finished further down the league

You do have a point, Darren. OTP hates moaning footballers, but you can see Given’s gripe in that he had the jersey, was playing well, was (as you say) City’s best player and still finds himself on the bench.

Given deserves to be at a club that respects him; Unfortunately he’s at City instead.
