Gabriel Agbonlahor has been told to lay off the weights by his Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier. The Frenchman is concerned his speedy striker is getting a bit too ripped for his own good.
In a bid to successfully become the anti-Martin O’Neill, Houllier has pulled the plug on Agbonlahor’s bodybuilding programme. O’Neill had told the England international to bulk-up when he was in charge.
Houllier said: “Yes, I’ve told him to lay off the weights. Sometimes players do too much. He’s not in the gym now. When you build up too much it affects your joints and muscles.
“The fact is, I think he should stop, he’s too stocky. The Gabby I saw when I was watching TV in France was different to what I see here. He was thinner, more wirey and wow, quick.”
And the camera adds ten pounds Gerard, so he must have been positively anorexic in those days.
On a largely unrelated note, have you heard Robert Pires say Houllier’s name yet? It’s a fantastic noise. It’s sort of: “Ooo-ee-ay.”
He sounds a bit like a monkey born in Yorkshire to French parents.
