Pass masters

Barcelona set a new world record for most passes in a football match as they demolished Real Sociedad 5-0 yesterday. The free-scoring La Liga champions strung together an impressive 938 passes during the rout.

Not only is that the most passes in a match since Opta records began in 2006, it also smashes the previous record by 108 passes.

That also means that Barca put together more passes in the match than Stoke City have in their last three Premier League games but together. OptaJoe informs us that figure is 913!

Midfield star Xavi was responsible for 120 of those passes – and he was substituted after 70 minutes!

Barca also broke the Champions League record (again since 2006) last week with the 971 Rubin Kazan.

An incredible match, really was one of the most dominating performances I’ve ever seen. A shot in the arm for football fans everywhere. The beautiful game is alive & well and currently living on the coast of Spain. I’ve compiled a few more stats from various sources on last nights match here:

OptaJoe is the finest twitter feed that I’ve ever come across. The day I can get a job there is the day I can sit back contented.

Is it too early to crown this team the greatest ever? We can wait until the Champions League formalities next year if you like…
