Blackburn Rovers are interested in appointing Diego Maradona as their new manager, their owners have confirmed.
The Venky’s Group originally hinted that they wanted an English boss. But their latest comments suggest they might be lining up a marquee appointment and that the ex-Argentina manager is top of their wish-list.
Venky’s chairman Anuradha Desai said told the Mirror: “We thought about Maradona as a coach after we took over. Talks were at the initial stage then, but there is no development on that front yet. For now, the current coach will be the manager till the end of the season. There is no question of signing anyone for such a short time.”
This obviously begs the question: couldn’t you just not have signed Geovanni and Kris Boyd and kept Sam Allardyce in charge until the end of the season? You know, what with him not doing a bad job and all that malarkey.
Maradona is reportedly interested in a Premier League job. But he told the latest edition of FourFourTwo magazine:
“Of course, I would like to manage in the Premier League. It’s a tournament that has great teams and even greater players… I was there visiting some clubs: I’ve been to Chelsea, I talked to Kevin Keegan too. The only problem is , all the clubs I like have very good managers!”
When he was talking about clubs he likes, it is difficult to imagine he had Blackburn in mind. And, in case Rovers fans were in any doubt about what type of appointment this would be, here is another sample answer from the same interview:
“A Thermos head today is Carlos Bilardo. Thermos head means dumb, stupid, ugly… it’s one of my expressions. I use it generally when I’m really mad at someone, and I say: “This is a Thermos head!” And when I say it, it never means something good.”
OTP would care to venture that the Venky’s Group would one day become Thermos heads in Diego’s eyes if he were to take the job.
