Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has revealed he is paying no attention to his manager’s suggestion that he should lose some weight. The 24-year-old believes he would get bullied by defenders and would once again face accusations of being too lightweight to be a top striker.
Agbonlahor said: “I can see where the manager is coming from, of course, but I think I was the same last season and that was my best season at Villa. I think maybe if I trimmed down and became how I was when I first broke into the team then I might lose an element to my game.”
So basically thanks, but no thanks.
Houllier had urged his striker to go easy on the weights amid concerns that he was losing some of his pace.
As we reported earlier this month, the Villa boss said: “Yes, I’ve told him to lay off the weights. Sometimes players do too much. He’s not in the gym now. When you build up too much it affects your joints and muscles.
“The fact is, I think he should stop, he’s too stocky. The Gabby I saw when I was watching TV in France was different to what I see here. He was thinner, more wirey and wow, quick.”
Meh, Gabby likes his biceps. You’ll just have to accept it, Gerard.
