Man City striker Mario Balotelli claims only Lionel Messi is better and he’s never heard of Jack Wilshere
It’s been a week for awkward award acceptances. Following Dimitar Berbatov’s don’t vote for me again plea, Mario Balotelli has managed to make an idiot of himself as he was awarded the Golden Boy award for the best Under-21 player in Europe by Italian newspaper Tuttosport.
The 20-year-old pipped Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere to the award, but it seems he was not aware of the competition and believes he has bigger fish to fry.
Asked about the runner-up, he said: “What is his name? Wil…? No, I don’t know him but the next time I play Arsenal, I will watch out for him. Maybe I will show him the Golden Boy and remind him I have won it!”
Then again, why would you take note of Wilshere when Lionel Messi is the only player in the world who is better than you.
Begging for some very loud “ahem” noise, particularly from the directions of Barcelona, Madrid and Milan, he added: “I am really happy to have won the Golden Boy 2010, but who else should have won it if not me? Two years ago I finished sixth and in 2009 in fourth. Now it is my turn.
“Now my objective is to win the Ballon D’Or without age limits. To win the Golden Boy is a good omen to win the main prize. I am now a candidate for that. There is only one player who is a little stronger than me – Messi. All the others are behind me.”
