The Adidas coat was a step too far

Inter Milan have confirmed that Rafael Benitez has been sacked after an agreement was reached over the termination of his contract.

The Wirral’s foremost barista had been treading a tightrope for a few days after speaking out against Inter owner Massimo Moratti following last weekend’s FIFA Club World Cup victory.

A statement released by Inter said “a mutually satisfactory agreement for the early termination of his contract” had been made.

OTP had suggested this morning that Benitez wearing an Adidas coat might push Nike-sponsored Inter over the edge. We would like to think that is what made the decision final.

Benitez has said said: “There are three possibilities for the club. One, 100% support for the coach and buy four or five players to build a stronger team with competition among the players to be able to carry on winning matches and trophies. Two, carry on like this without a project, without planning, and go ahead with one person to blame for the whole season getting to May this way. The third is to speak to my agent and reach an agreement if there is not this support. Simple.”

The ex-Liverpool boss has lasted just six months in Jose Mourinho’s old shoes. Roy Hodgson will be hoping he fares a bit better in Benitez’s former footwear.
