Sunderland’s Darren Bent hands in transfer request, wants to swap possible European qualification for relegation scrap at Aston Villa
Sunderland star Darren Bent stunned the club by handing in a transfer request after yesterday’s Tyne-Wear derby, then stunned them even more by revealing he wants to join Aston Villa.
The Premier League strugglers have reportedly bid £18 million for the England striker in a deal that could rise to £24 million.
Despite his side sitting pretty in sixth place in the league and having already bagged 10 goal this season, Bent has said he wants to leave.
A Sunderland statement said: “The club can confirm that it received a written transfer request from Darren Bent following Sunday’s Wear-Tyne derby match.”
Come on, your star striker wants to quit – it’s hardly the time for semantics: everybody knows it’s Tyne-Wear.
The Black Cats are believed to have rejected the bid and will hold out for a deal starting at £20 million.
