The Milan derby is always a passionate affair between two of Europe’s most famous clubs. Galatasaray versus Fenerbahce is not one for the faint-hearted while the ‘Superclasico’ between Boca Juniors and River Plate in Argentina probably boasts the most hostile atmosphere of any match in the world.
Over in Scotland, fans of Celtic and Rangers will tell you that the Old Firm matches have the weight of history, politics and religion on their side.
However, the one fixture that can cast all those clashes into the shade is Real Madrid v Barcelona – otherwise known as ‘El Clasico’
Between them, the two clubs have won 12 European Cups and 51 La Liga titles making them not only the most successful teams in Spain but two of the most prolific on the planet.
But it is not just their on-pitch rivalry that creates the antipathy between the two powerhouses. With Real Madrid the favourite team of King Juan Carlos and formerly supported by former dictator General Franco, they are diametrically opposed to the separatist, republican leftist leaning of Catalonia’s Barcelona.
Add to that heady mix, some of the greatest players ever to have graced a football pitch, such as Johan Cruyff, Alfredo Di Stefano, Diego Maradona and Ferenc Puskas, together with present day stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and you have the ingredients for a spectacle with no equal.
The next instalment takes place at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid on April 17 in a match that will have a big say in the destination of this season’s La Liga title. The gap between Barcelona in first place and Real in second is currently four points which already suggests that this is a ‘must-win’ game for the home side.
With memories of their 5-0 drubbing at Camp Nou in November still fresh in the memory, manager Jose Mourinho and his team will be keen to exact revenge and with 90,000 partisan fans packed into the stadium it is a game not to be missed.
Despite the magnitude of the fixture, tickets for the match are still available. Visit Tixdaq.com for more information on El Clasico and for all other football tickets.
