Meet the Bolton Wanderers Academy stars – Owen Coyle would rather have an empty bench than pick them!

Trot on

Bolton’s well-documented injury problems have left Owen Coyle with just 15 first-team players at his disposal. What has been slightly baffling is his refusal to call upon an Academy player, even if it was just to warm the bench and sample the atmosphere of senior football.

Instead he named just four substitutes for last night’s draw with Wigan and last weekend’s defeat to Liverpool.

OTP decided to investigate the Trotters’ under-18 squad on the club’s official website and hunt out any potential reasons why Coyle was so reluctant to give his young guns a chance.

Here are our findings:

1. Defender Alex McQuade is likely to have been ruled because he cites a Natasha Bedingfield song as the most listened to track on his iPod.

2. Midfielder Josh Vela names Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On as his favourite track.

3. Coyle might be concerned that the Academy squad spends more time hacking each other’s website profiles than training!

4. Seven of the 19 players profiled on Bolton’s website name their favourite food as Nando’s. Perhaps Coyle is concerned about a group of teenagers stocked up on spicy chicken and Pepsi refills having their backsides in such close proximity to his head on the row behind in the dugout.

Don’t they won’t be registered within the league to be able to play?
