Striker heads to Melwood for medical

Newcastle have accepted a transfer request from Andy Carroll and a £35 million bid from Liverpool for the player. The Magpies had earlier turned down bids from the Reds before the homegrown striker asked to leave.

The England international is now on his way to Liverpool to undergo a medical at the club.

A Liverpool statement said: “Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United had accepted a Club record offer for the transfer of Andy Carroll.

“The Club have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical.”

Newcastle turned down a £30 million bid from Liverpool and a subsequent bid of £35 million. But a further offer at the same price was accepted after Carroll submitted a transfer request.

As we alluded to earlier, Carroll will be sorely missed at St James’ Park, but £35 million? They had to sell.

Update: Headline FAIL from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, which went with: “Ace Carroll: I want to stay.”
