Random 1990s Footballer Tuesday: #1 Chris Bart-Williams

Posted by - January 18, 2011 - Random 1990s

Name: Chris Bart-Williams

In his 1990s prime for: Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest

Lowdown: The Sierra Leone-born midfielder was the subject of many a playground debate: was it double barrel surname, a double barrel first-name, or was he just really proud of his Simpsons-inspired middle name? Although a cult favourite, we doubt if anyone was able to stump up enough money to get his name on the back of their shirt. He was called up to the England squad but never played, although he was a regular at under-21 level and played for the B team. In the early 2000s, he was put on gardening leave by Forest and manager Paul Hart was banned from picking him. The previous season’s top scorer and player of the year had turned down a move away from the club!

Now: He’s based in the States and is double-jobbing as assistant coach to the Quinnipiac Bobcats college team and Executive Director of the SoccerPlus Connecticut women’s team.
