Aston Villa striker Darren Bent had one particularly fond farewell to bid before leaving Sunderland – to Steve Bruce’s daughter Amy. The News of the World reports that Bent had been secretly dating his manager’s daughter for the past six months.
The Black Cats boss had hit out at Bent over his transfer. He said: “All Bent has thought of is himself.”
But it now emerges that his daughter would beg to differ. In a quote that we now know could have come from Steve or Amy, Bruce added: “The timing is especially hard to take, given that we are progressing positively and are in a great position to push on.”
Even if Bruce Snr had found out about the relationship, it is not believed to be a factor in the decision to let Bent leave.
A source told NotW: “He got a great price for him and I don’t think his decision was affected by the romance with Amy.”
In 2004, Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie was alleged to have had an affair with Amy Bruce, who was an A-level student at the time. Hendrie denied it, but her then Birmingham City manager dad appeared at a match with cuts and bruises on his face allegedly sustained fighting off two thieves trying to take his daughter’s Mini. The attempted theft was never reported to West Midlands Police.
