OTP Podcast: Episode 19 – Groan Nations

One hundred and eighty-ee-ah

This week we’ve inadvertently modelled the Off The Post podcast on England’s victory over Wales – there’s a good degree of complacency, two flashes of something mildly entertaining and it’s all over in under 45 minutes.

On this week’s show we’ll be trying to answer all the big questions. Does Brazil exist anymore? Could Lampard and Gerrard ever work together as pundits? Is Mario Balotelli the next Phil “The Power” Taylor? And has there been another animal tragedy in the world of football this week? On top of those conundrums we have a full round-up of all the best and most bizarre action from the weekend’s international games.

Also in the audio mixer, is a well overdue interview with Madron FC midfielder Jon Spencer who fills us in on how the worst team in England has been getting on over the past few weeks. Having conceded 70 goals in the last five games, let’s just say it’s not been ideal for the Cornish village outfit. It’s all enough to make you want to boo the opposition’s national anthem…or in Wales’ case, your own national anthem.

VIDEOS:

Denmark’s Dennis Rommedahl scoring the pick of the weekend’s goals with a “full fat” volley. Notice how once the corner is taken the ball doesn’t touch the ground until it’s in the back of the net. Glorious!

Czech Republic striker Milan Baros doing his best to get signed up for this year’s pantomime season. Our favourite bit is the video’s title-very straight to the point.

Ex-Man City playmaker Elano scoring an absolutely ridiculous goal in the Copa Libertadores for Santos against Colo Colo. That strike had more bends in it than Andy Carroll’s Jagerbomb drinking arm on a night out.

Sky Blue FC’s manager after their game against LdB Malmo was interrupted by a canine intruder: “The squad is a bit thin at the moment so that was actually one of our substitutes who had just come on-she’s always hungry for goals and just loves being on the ball. The way the opposition players carried her off like that, I can’t believe neither of them saw red.”

Veteran Sao Paolo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni scoring a quite remarkable 100th career goal with a delicious free kick against rivals Corinthians. Considering Paraguayan goalkeeping legend Jose Luis Chilavert only has a poultry 62 goals to his name, Mr Ceni hasn’t done half bad. Unbelievable Jeff!

And for those of you with plenty of time on your hands, here are all 100 of the goalkeeping sensation’s strikes (and there are some immense free kicks in there). We highly recommend numbers 43, 51, 65, 79, and of course the big 100. Enjoy!
