Qatar 2022 World Cup turning into an episode of The Simpsons

Aspects of the Qatar 2022 World Cup plans have always seemed a bit zany, not least the various techniques to combat the sweltering conditions that are being explored. But the latest idea – stolen from The Simpsons character Mr Burns – is definitely the pick of the bunch.

Floating mechanical craft which block the sunlight are being touted as a possible way to keep the World Cup stadia at a comfortable temperature.

Mechanical engineers from Qatar University want to fly ‘mechanical clouds’ high above each stadium. The craft would be made from lightweight carbon and are being considered as a greener alternative to air conditioning every ground.

Saud Abdul Gani, head of the university’s mechanical and industrial faculty, said: “We are in discussion with the Qatar Science and Technology Park about the costs and to create an initial model on a trial basis.”

The idea is blatantly stolen from the Who Shot Mr Burns? episode of The Simpsons, in which Mr Burns puts a metal disc above Springfield to block the sun and increase use of the electricity generated by his nuclear power plant.
