Racist Zenit St Petersburg fan offers Roberto Carlos a banana

Welcome to Russia

The Russian Premier League’s newest star arrival has already found himself the victim of a racist taunt. Brazilian star Roberto Carlos was handed a peeled banana by a Zenit St Petersburg supporter as he lined up for the new club Anzhi.

Despite his best efforts to assimilate with local culture, the 37-year-old was targeted by Zenit fans before kick-off.

To his credit, the World Cup winner took the incident in his stride. He said: “I didn’t get offended. In my 37 years I’ve seen it all so I didn’t get upset after seeing a banana.”

But while the ex-Real Madrid man wasn’t offended, plenty of people will be. It raises yet more questions over the recent World Cup bid announcement, since it now appears FIFA is holding the 2018 World Cup in a country where blatant racism is accepted and the 2022 World Cup in a country where homosexuality is illegal.

Zenit have vowed to help the police investigate the incident.

  • Boohoo

Pretty common type of behaviour/attitude among the ‘Ruskiye fanat’ ultras. Piss poor coming from Zenit who are a bit more cultured than the Moscow clubs, and who should have a bit of self-respect after winning UEFA Cup not long ago. Sounds like RC handled it well.

Don’t get me started on the awarding of the World Cups!
