Top five conclusions: Barcelona 3-1 Arsenal

Posted by - March 9, 2011 - Arsenal, Champions League, Conclusions

1. Cesc Fabregas’ determination to play for Barcelona in the Champions League knows no bounds.

2. Wojciech Szczesny is forced off with a trivial injury and Robin Van Persie ends up costing his team the match. Interesting role reversal for the Gunners.

3. We jest, angry Arsenal fans. Van Persie’s sending off was ridiculously harsh. We’re inclined to agree with Wenger: the contest was unnecessarily ruined.

4. Having said that, we did rather enjoy Van Persie pointing to the sizeable Camp Nou crowd to explain why he didn’t hear the whistle.

5. Despite Arsenal’s justifiable complaints, there is no doubting which of football’s beautiful teams played the most beautiful football over the two legs.

Can’t win trophies, can’t beat Barcelona…let’s face it, Arsenal are no Rubin Kazan.

shouldn’t have been sent off, but RVP 100% knew he was offside. He would never have had a right footed snapshot whilst in space if he thought he was on. He would have headed for goal and got it onto his left peg.

Totally stupid rule… you cant kick THE ball away when they use a dozen balls to get it back in play quicker. RvP kicked A ball away.

But if Rooney was crucified for his elbow on McCarthy *that wasnt even hard enough to knock him over*, then RvP should have been off for his slap in the first half anyway.

What about the RvP slap for the first yellow? Alves went down harder than he could have (Motta/Busquets anyone?)… the Barca players (plus keeper) immediately crowded the referee. The Barca players arent worried about reinforcing English stereotypes of foreigners are they?

[Yellow card post: yellow cards are easier to pick up in the days of feigning injuries and fancy-dan footballers (and I didn’t just say foreigners)]
